Beale Reader Costumes
Boys can wear a button-up shirt with scrunchies on the arms for garters. A ribbon tied around the neck will make the string tie. Green paper cuffs and a visor would work well for bankers. They can wear the string tie as well. Young boys can wear their dark-colored socks over their their pants to make knickers. Vests or suspenders were also style. Overalls are also appropriate. Boys can wear black or brown boots or laced shoes. Hats were always appropriate but remember men always removed their hats inside a building in those days.
Girls can borrow cotton dresses or skirts from their moms. Borrow an apron to keep the dress in place and remember an apron was always worn at home because you wore one dress all week and just changed aprons daily. Young girls wore long dresses also. They wore an apron called a pinafore. Wear a shawl or scarf over the shoulders. Bonnets were always worn outside because fair skin was beautiful but a tan showed that you had to work too hard. A straw hat can also be worn. It was hard to wash your hair so if it got washed once a week you were lucky. Women wore their hair up in buns and girls wore braids. Hats were also worn to cover that dirty hair and to protect your face from the sun. Girls should wear shoes with straps or laces.
