Culminating Activity - Weaving
Here are some suggestions for weaving.
Make a weaving loom using a styrofoam meat tray. Make an even number of notches on the ends. Secure the end of cotton string (yarn stretches) in the first notch. Wind the string from top to bottom using all of the notches. Secure with another knot. Using the over and under method weave yam or string in and out of the loom. When you change colors, leave a 4-5 inch length to be woven in later. Push woven yam together tightly as you go. When the loom is full, carefully remove from the loom threading a dowel or stick through the loops on either end. The tighter you weave- the more secure this will be. Weave in loose thread left from color changes. Do not cut these off, the weaving will ravel.
A box or wooden frame may also be used for the loom.
Simple weaving with paper
Fold a 12x18 piece of construction paper in a 9x12, leaving a 11/2 - 2 inch border on the edge. Cut from the folded edge up to 2 inches from the open edge at the top at one-inch intervals. Open the paper. Use one-inch strips of paper 15 inches long to weave in and out. When loom is full, fold loose ends of paper strips to back of weaving and secure with glue.
