Culminating Activity - Newspaper
Write a Newspaper
As a culminating activity, have your class write a newspaper. Divide your class into small groups. Have each group write a news article about one of the Kern County pioneer families that they have just studied. The students could write about Edward Beale's camels or Charles Jewett drowning in the Kern River. They can also write advertisements for different businesses such as Chester or Solomon Jewett's store. You could name the Newspaper the Southern Californian because that was the newspaper that Julius Chester edited.
The computer program Student Writing Center is a good one for publishing a newspaper. Any good word processing program will work. If you have a computer lab and students are proficient enough to type, they can type their articles and save them on a disc. You can then compile them into a newspaper. If you do not have access to technology or enough time to use it, use the page format on the next sheet.
