Beale Activities

Language Arts: Write: How is a camel like a horse? How are they different? Which animal is better to use in Kern County?

Readers Theater: Beale Readers Theater

Math: Make a map of Kern County. Make a map of your classroom or your bedroom.

Science: The army brought mostly one-humped camels to the United States, but they did have a few two-humped camels. Look in the encyclopedia and find the difference between one and twohumped camels.

P.E. Camel relays. Divide the students into equal teams. Each child must crawl on their hands and feet making a hump a specified distance and back and tag the next student in line. First team finished wins. This may also be played on hands and knees but the student must move left hand and foot together and right hand and foot together. If played on a rainy day, the students could try to carry books on their backs while crawling this way.

Art: Draw a desert landscape. Using water colors, paint a brown desert with some sand dunes. When dry, paint the sky starting at the top with a wide strip of blue, then purple, then red, then orange, and finally yellow. Let the colors blend together. Be sure to teach that the sky meets the ground at the horizon. When dry paste camels cut on the Elison machine (available at the Learning Center) crossing the desert at sunset.
