Colonel Baker Activities
1. Social Studies/Art : Create a scrapbook by drawing photographs of the different events in Baker's life. Write a caption for each.
2.Social Studies : Create a certificate for Colonel Baker. Why does he deserve award?
3. Math/Social Studies : Create a timeline of the events of Colonel Baker's life
4. Language Arts : Create a travel brochure to encourage people to move to Bakersfield
5. Social Studies/Art : Create a mural of an early street in Bakersfield. Include the grist mill, I I, the doctor's office, the school, the general store, the blacksmith's shop, and homes.
6. Math/Social Studies/Art : Construct a model of the early town of Bakersfield. Use small boxes painted or covered in construction paper
7. Language Arts : Discuss: What kind of skills were important to the settlers? Would you like to live on their diet? Why/ Why not? What foods would you miss most if you were a settler? Was nature a friend, enemy or both? Why? What does self sufficient mean with respect to food?
8. Social Studies/Language Arts : Brainstorm a list of jobs that would be needed in the town. Create a chart of Occupation, Work Done, Contribution To Community.
9. Social Studies : Create a Changing Occupations display. Have half the class draw or paint a figure to represent an early settler occupation. Have the other half of the class create pictures to illustrate the occupation of today. Display the figure and picture side by side
10. Drama : Students role play the different occupations needed in the new town. The other students must identify the occupation in a limited time with yes/no questions. Examples: Do you work indoors? Do you work with wood? Science/Social Studies/Language Arts: Build a menu from the foods that the Baker family may have eaten on the trip west. When they reached Bakersfield. Include directions for the recipes.
