Woody Question Answer Key

1. In 1862 a large flood washed away all of the crops being grown by the Woodys. Kern Island was known for floods so the Woodys moved to higher land with less of a chance for more flooding.

2. The town of Woody was in the mountains and sometimes hard to get to by horse and wagon. Bakersfield was more centrally located between two cities that were already established (Visalia and Los Angeles). With the building of canals and levees the town of Bakersfield could better handle the rain and river water.

3. Dr. Woody's wife was Sarah Louse Bohna. The Bohna family were the first settlers in Kern Island now Bakersfield.

4. The Woody General Store was the center of the town. It was where people gathered to talk, hear news, play games and buy supplies. Dr. Woody stopped practicing medicine. He probably loved being outdoors working with plants and animals. He also might of enjoyed the challenge of settling new land like his parents had done in Missouri.
