abandoned - To give up completely, to leave.
adventurous - Eager to have exciting or dangerous experiences; bold.
blacksmith - A person who makes things from iron. A blacksmith heats the iron in the forge and then hammers it into shape on an anvil. A blacksmith can make shoes for horses.
bushel - A measure for grain, fruit, vegetables, and other dry things. A bushel is equal to four pecks or 32 quarts.
calico - A cotton material that has small brightly colored designs printed on it.
curious - Eager to learn about things that are new, strange, or interesting.
dangerous - Likely to cause something bad or harmful to happen.
decaying - To rot slowly. The wooden beams of the old building were decaying.
malaria - A disease that causes chills, a high fever, and sweating. People get malaria when they are bitten by certain kinds of mosquitoes that carry the disease.
tule - A large bulrush growing on damp or flooded land in the southwestern United States
unhealthy - lacking health, sickly
whooping cough - A contagious respiratory disease affecting children more than adults; violent coughing disease
