Jewett Family Activities

Technology/Study Skills/Language Arts: Learn how sheep are sheared from books, on the Internet, or by visiting a sheep ranch.

Math/Science: Eat what the miners ate. Try this recipe:

Miner's Meat Pie
1 lb. lean lamb or mutton
1 large chopped onion salt
2 beef bouillon cubes 2 T. boiling water
1 10 3/4 oz. can cream of potato soup
2 refrigerated piecrusts for top and bottom
1/4t. garlic powder

Saute meat and onion in pan until meat loses its pink color. Dissolve the bouillon cubes in boiling water. Add to meat. Mix in garlic powder and soup. Salt to taste. Line pie pan with pastry. Pour in meat mixture. Put on top crust. Crimp edges of pastry. Poke small hole in center of top. Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Lower temperature to 350 degrees. Bake 45-55 minutes longer. If top begins to get too brown, cover loosely with aluminum foil. Serves 6

Art: Try spinning some wool thread with a drop spindle.

Make a loom and try weaving.

Make a diorama of what a sheep ranch would look like.

Map Skills/Geography: Use a map to trace the Jewett family's travels beginning in England and ending in Kern County.

Science/Technology Examine tools used in the 1800s and guess how they might have been used.

Math: Create a classroom bank. Name the bank. Elect a president and cashier. Practice writing checks or drafts, counting money, and making change. Discuss lending money, making payments, and charging interest. Create a loan document to be used for businesses when they need to borrow money for getting established or for rebuilding after the fire. Try to think of how Solomon Jewett would have handled such requests from the community.

Science/Study Skills/Language Arts: Find information about the Kern River. Discover why it is so dangerous for swimmers. How can visitors enjoy the river and remain safe?

Art/Science: Look in magazines to find products we use today that are made of wool. Make a collage of these pictures.
