Events & Training Opportunities
The staff development activities being offered this year are a rich mixture of methods, strategies and new ideas and tools to address the many areas of concern and provide the information that is needed for you to help achieve positive outcomes for our students. Descriptive brochures and registration forms for each training will be distributed to district personnel, administrators, special education contact personnel, agencies and parents currently on our mailing lists.
In addition to the Special Education Staff Development Opportunities 2008-2009, there is also the option for district directed and requested activities. A district may call the SELPA office and arrange a topic specific workshop to address an identified area of concern for that site or district. Please also visit the video training library, On-Site Presentations, Hot Topics and Take-Out Menu for list of additional topics.

This session presents an innovative approach for addressing the needs of children with articulation differences in the public school setting. San Diego Unified School District shifted its services to a general education service delivery model for these students. District-wide resources and procedures are described. The session features evidence-based intervention practices and videos to demonstrate these principles. Four years of project data illustrate the efficacy of this short-term, intensive approach, which strives to remediate a single sound in 20 hours or less. This session concludes with a discussion of future implications and best practices in the schools. Time: 11:00 am - 3:30 pm

Treating children with cleft lip and palate as well as craniofacial anomalies often provides a challenging situation for the busy speech pathologist. This presentation will highlight the clinical aspects of assessment and treatment of these children as well as discuss related aspects of anatomy, surgery, orthodontics, and possible psychosocial issues. Because these children may constitute a small number of any speech pathologist’s caseload, the complexity of the structural and functional issues may be overwhelming at times. We will provide an in-depth discussion and demonstration of assessment strategies as well as lots of creative therapy techniques. This presentation will help the clinician know where to begin treatment, understand the techniques which will provide the most success and know when and how to refer a family to a Cleft Plate Team. With early intervention and comprehensive, longitudinal Team care, children with cleft palate/craniofacial anomalies have an excellent opportunity for achieving good results in all aspects of care, and in particular, speech production skills and resonance balance. Time: 8:00 am – 3:30 pm
Location: Kern County Superintendent of Schools, 1300 17th Street - CITY CENTER, Bakersfield, CA 93301, Conference Room 1B

This training is intended as a team response program for personnel who work directly with students on the autism spectrum. If your staff has been trained more than one year ago, the Crisis Prevention Institute recommends training to renew and refresh skills. If your staff has changes, and individuals who were initially trained as a team have left or changed assignments, this is a good time to build the group understanding of the current team. Districts are encouraged to send the same group that was trained as a team initially whenever possible.
- There is no cost for the refresh workshop.
- Necessary materials will be provided during the training.
- Please wear loose, comfortable clothing like jeans or jogging suits, tennis shoes. No jewelry or long nails.
