Message from the President, Pete Cook

Greetings to both current and potential SOSCA members.  My apologies for the delay in updating this message.

As we wind down on the current school year, I would like to take time to thank all of you for the job you've done focusing on the task at hand.  I realize it is difficult to focus on work when we are subjected daily to speculation and rumors of potential reductions in educational funding all over the state of California.  Yet through it all, you have understood our goal in any financial situation is to continue to serve our students; our role to endure the tough times so that they may benefit from better times in the future.

As our office braces for future challenges ahead in regard to classified positions, your SOSCA Board has fielded several questions on what the individual employee can do to continue to be a valuable resource in the eyes of their supervisors.  Here are a few suggestions:

Get to work on time.
Be present and busy at your work site.
Cooperate with your fellow employees and treat them in a professional manner.
Abide by and follow the rules of the office.

These may sound simplistic, yet many of the employee issues we are requested to intervene in revolve around such simple issues.  In the months ahead, you want to stand out as being a productive, dependable worker.  Your actions, attitude and effort should reflect the fact that you are a motivated worker who takes great pride in what you do.

Finally your entire SOSCA Board understands the frustration and disappointment some of you may feel toward our legislators in Sacramento for neglecting to address the plight of school districts statewide.  Hopefully, at some point in the near future we will see legislation mandating a restoration of school funding to, at least, previous levels.  However, until that time comes we are all in this together.  Although your board will negotiate aggressively on your behalf for the 2010-2011 year, we realize that our office, through no fault of its own, has been negatively impacted by Sacramento as well.  Even though KCSOS has been fiscally conservative, the resources that were available to the office in the past may no longer be accessible.  That is why I think it is more vital than ever that all components of our office, classified, certificated and administration communicate and cooperate with each other in order to clear the hurdles placed before us.  We have encountered and overcome tough times in the past.  There is no reason to believe we can't do the same this year.
