Support Group Facilitation Skills Training
Who Should Attend?
Staff from any school or district that has implemented Student Assistance. Participants need no additional degrees or licenses. Limit of two staff per school site per training, unless space allows. Limit of 14 participants per training.
Note: schools planning to implement support groups should plan to train at least two staff members, as groups must be co-facilitated. Classified staff may co-facilitate groups with certificated staff.
About the training:
In this intensive four-day workshop, participants will learn the procedures and processes for conducting school-based support groups for students. Topics to be addressed include:
- Goals of school based support groups.
- Selecting appropriate students for groups.
- Stages of group process and appropriate activities for each stage.
- Designing and facilitating support group sessions.
- Troubleshooting difficult situations.
Participants will be involved in support group activities as they learn the mechanics of organizing and implementing this important prevention/intervention strategy for students with specific needs. It is expected that participants will co-facilitate at least two support groups at their site during the 12 months following the training. Schools planning to implement support groups should plan to train at least two staff members (or one staff and one community agency partner) as groups must be co-facilitated.
At the end of the training, participants learn how to assess their own readiness to conduct groups and how to work closely with their Student Assistance Team in identifying children with special needs to link them with appropriate services.
