Student Assistance Team Training
Who Should Attend?
Student Assistance Teams from elementary, intermediate, junior and senior high schools.
Team Composition:
Teams should include an administrator, at least two teachers, and at least one classified staff person. Teams may include school site support staff, a parent, and/or a school board member, or service providers from community agencies (e.g., DARE or probation officer; representative from an agency the provides counseling or other services). Limit of seven team members per school.
About the training:
Student Assistance Team training is designed for schools that are developing, implementing, expanding or revising their student referral and intervention process. Teams will:
- learn about the risk and protective factors impacting students in the classroom;
- explore the range of behaviors of concern as evidenced at school;
- discuss ways to maximize resources of Student Assistance functions;
- design/streamline an intervention and referral process easily accessible to school staff, parents and students;
- learn what community-based resources are available to school teams to assist identified students and their families;
- review case studies of identified students and develop intervention plans using a group memory process;
- identify school-based services and resources to assist identifed students and families;
- explore methods for garnering staff, parent and community support and participation in Student Assistance; and
- develop initial steps in an action plan for increasing staff awareness of Student Assistance goals and strengthening the Student Assistance process for their respective sites.
Student Assistance Team training is an opportunity to team-build, develop new skills, and boost morale. Most importantly, it’s a comprehensive model for assisting students to succeed in school by providing them with necessary and appropriate support services.
