Veterans Against Drugs and Violence
Target: Students, grades 4-5
The goal of this program is to establish a monitoring relationship between a veteran and elementary age students which will last throughout the school year. The classroom mentoring program consists of six regularly scheduled visits focused on two main outcomes.
- Helping young people develop positive social behaviors, such as self-discipline, responsibility, good judgment and the ability to get along with others;
- Helping young people develop positive commitments to their families, schools, peers and communities, including a commitment to lead healthy, drug free and tobacco free lives.
Veterans Against Drugs and Violence is a community service project initiated by the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Medal of Honor Society as a part of a national pilot project in partnership with Kern County Schools. The main theme of the Kern county Veterans Against Drugs and Violence program is "No Drugs, No violence, let’s ‘Commit to Life’?" Classroom presentations/discussions are built around five core values: Camaraderie, Compassion, Integrity, Meaningful Achievement and Advocacy.
A brief program manual has been created to orient veterans, teachers and school administrators to this mentoring initiative.
