School-Community Violence Prevention: Focus on Gangs
Who Should Attend?
Administrators, school staff, law enforcement officers, parents, students.
About the training:
What makes one neighborhood more crime-resistant than another? Stability, economic health, education, and employment opportunities play important roles; but one of the greatest assets is a mobilized, active group of residents who work together to forestall or reduce conditions that are likely to bring on violence, drugs, and other crime.
This training is about community mobilization; the process of engaging residents and resources of a specific social, economic, and/or geographic unit in focused prevention and intervention efforts that address locally important problems. Participants will learn the components of a comprehensive school/community violence prevention plan, including zero tolerance, training and education, prevention activities, intervention services, and responding in a crisis. Theyn will also (1) obtain historical perspective and current information on local gangs within their school community; (2) understand the current research on protective factors and resiliency; and (3) determine appropriate collaborative strategies for school/community mobilization and reclamation. Most importantly, participants will begin a school/community action plan to address the issue of violence, and learn how to access local, state and federal resources and funding to do so.
