Getting Things Done
Local AmeriCorps Members provide direct service to children in Central Valley communities. In the first eleven program years, Members:
- Tutored more than 8000 students in grades K-12.
- Over 60% of reading and math students demonstrated improvement above and beyond the national rate of growth at their grade level.
- Established summer recreational and tutoring programs for children.
- Mentored over 400 students to improve self-discipline and school attendance.
- Mentored over 700 students in after-school programs.
- Participated in over 500 community service projects.
- Recruited over 3500 volunteers to help build stronger communities.
Encouraging Responsibility
AmeriCorps promotes social responsibility to one’s community, and challenges its Members to be problem-solvers in our communities. Members receive specialized training and job experience that will help them succeed in life and make them more effective leaders. During a one-year term of service, Members receive training in conflict mediation, first aid, CPR, emergency response, math and reading tutoring strategies, and positive discipline. They also develop skills in communication, community building, personal and professional development, goal setting, and preparing for the work force.
Strengthening Communities
The AmeriCorps Members are working hand in hand with the Neighborhood Partnerships created by the Kern County Network for Children in Bakersfield, Delano, Lamont, Mojave and Shafter. These Partnerships encourage grass-roots solutions to local problems and serve as models for improving the delivery of health and human services to children and families. Members helped the Partnerships organize over 500 community service events and recruit volunteers in Kern County during the first eleven program years.
Expanding Opportunity
AmeriCorps helps those who help their communities. In the KernCorps AmeriCorps Program, the Members gain firsthand training and experience in providing for the education and needs of children. AmeriCorps gives many young people the opportunity to attend college. Upon completing one year of service, AmeriCorps Members receive an education award worth $4,725 to pay college tuition, finance vocational training or pay back student loans. Members also earn a small monthly living allowance.
