Instill a Love of Learning

Talk with your child about what they are learning at school.  From kindergartner to high school senior, it's important to ask students about their school subjects.  Ask questions that can't be answered with a "yes" or "no."  Also, talk with your child about the things you do everyday.  Trips to the grocery store, post office, and bank can all be learning opportunities that you can share with the entire family.

Take your children to special places with you and talk about what you see!

Encourage your child to be a life-long learner.  Talking to your child about the future helps them to begin thinking about higher educational goals.  Plan to attend the annual Kern County College Night with your high school student to answer the question: "Which college or university is right for me?".  This year's event, Kern County College Night 2007 is on Tuesday, September 11th at the Rabobank Convention Center in Bakersfield.

Children spend about 1,000 hours per year in school.  Helping your child enjoy learning and being successful in school is an important goal for parents, families, and schools.  State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O'Connell, recently offered a to-do list for parents to help children succeed in school (Parent To-Do List for Back to School_2007).  As he stated, "I hope that these suggestions will be sustained throughout the school year so learning will feel more like an adventure instead of a challenge."
