Students have a ‘Field Day’ with math
Rosedale Middle School’s Aaron Taylor pointed out that his school was taking a “Radical” approach, as expressed on the back of teammate Brandon Cheong’s T-shirt.
Andrea Orozco was out in front of the pack, checking her calculations as she ran to solve a problem in the Team Relays.
Mountain View Middle School’s Erik Perez, Ollivier Middle School’s Cecilia Torres and Washington Jr. High’s Crystal Lopez wore T-shirts that expressed their fondness for math.
And let the team relays begin, as students dashed toward the first set of problems to solve.
Although it is not scored as a team competition, Murray Middle School of Ridgecrest distinguished itself with 10 category finalists and Rosedale Middle School and La Viña Middle School of Delano each had eight finalists among approximately 800 students from 31 schools who competed at the 39th annual Kern County Middle School Mathematics Field Day held at Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield May 2.
The competition, sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Westchester Kiwanis Club, Bakersfield Math Council, California Math Council, Kern County Science Foundation American Petroleum Institute-San Joaquin Valley Chapter and Ridgeview High, is a fun day of problem solving games and competitions. Some have playful names such as “leap frog” and “mad hatter.” Still others offer the flavor of athletic competition with names such as “power relay,” “circuit training,” “individual medley” and “triathlon games.”
One event in particular, the Team Relays, seemed to bring out the real competitive nature in the students, as well as those sitting in the stands rooting for them. Once starter Michael Cushine said, “Go,” dozens of students took off running for the nearby first row of stands in the Ridgeview Gym where they had to stop, work a problem, then race back to the start so another teammate could venture forth to make changes to the problem or verify it was correct. Each four person team continued the relay until a proctor ruled the problem was solved. The first three teams to solve the problems were declared first, second or third place winners depending on their order of finish.
“It was the hardest event,” said Ollivier Middle School seventh-grader Cecilia Torres, whose team finished third in the category. “The question was one I was not familiar with, but the experience of this year will make me prepare even harder for next year. I pride myself on knowing I can be prepared for life and math is one of those things that helps me do that - besides, it’s fun.”
“Questions are written to the California Content Standards ,” said Kathy Hill, event coordinator. “So, students can prepare for Mathematics Field Day while preparing for the California Standards Test (CST) at the same time. And the competition is fun for everyone.”
Sixth, seventh, eighth-graders or those in an algebra class for which they will receive high school credit compete in a series of written events testing their math skills individually and in teams of two, three, four and five by grade level.
Washington Jr. High, which had five event finalists of its own, took a unique approach in preparing for Math Field Day, according to its Mathematics Academic Coach Hilda Wright.
“Our students are really interested in Math Field Day, judging by the number who tried out to be on the team. The tryouts were packed,” Wright said. “They had to meet the strict criteria to be one of the 30 on the team. We had teachers working together for success. We counted on each other for support. Plus, we also had some competitions at school leading up to Math Field Day to make sure the students were prepared and ready to compete. The other good thing is that all the preparation serves a dual purpose for the students because it helps them practice for the CST.”
