Exploring ways to MOVE forward

Administrators from MOVE model sites throughout the U.S. and New Zealand gathered in Bakersfield for two days in November to share experiences, ideas and map future directions.

"We view the MOVE model sites as the front line for innovation, education and to help maintain uniformity in the delivery of services by those charged with improving the quality of life for clients with severe disabilities," said David Schreuder, MOVE International executive director.

The MOVE curriculum and training teaches professionals approaches that provide mobility to children and adults with severe disabilities. This includes teaching these special people how to sit, stand and walk rather than being restricted to a wheelchair or beanbag.

MOVE is a 501(c)3 charity and a division of the Office of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. The 501(c)3 status allows MOVE to receive grants and other outside funding. MOVE has its roots in a special education program operated by the county superintendent and founded by former special education teacher Linda Bidabe. The concept began almost 20 years ago.

Today MOVE operates throughout the United States and in many countries overseas.

"MOVE has demonstrated time and time again that it makes a significant, measurable difference in the quality of life of people with disabilities and the parents and others who care for these special people," said Kern County Superintendent of Schools and MOVE board chairman Larry E. Reider.

Model sites were established to encourage innovation and provide a location for parents, educators and health professionals who want to learn about MOVE. The Bakersfield meeting of MOVE Model Site administrators provides a forum to share ideas, experiences and explore ways to help more people gain mobility skills once thought impossible, said Schreuder.
