Gifts from 'HolidayLights'
Part of the excitement of "HolidayLights @ CALM," currently on display through Dec. 30, is taking home the memories. The California Living Museum's (CALM) newly expanded gift shop is now a fourth larger and features one-of-a-kind treasures sure to leave a memorable impression of visiting CALM long after the "HolidayLights" season concludes. By expanding in size, the gift shop has added space to offer a wider variety of items and allow visitors to shop in relative ease. During "HolidayLights," part of the auditorium is even being utilized, providing extra room for CALM’s extended holiday inventory of gifts including Wildlife Artists Association artwork of which part of the proceeds will benefit CALM.
Just as "HolidayLights" designed by Josh Barnett's Lightasmic is unparalleled in size, color and imagination anywhere in Kern County, so, too, are the choices of unique merchandise available in the CALM Gift Shop. Wild Republic plush (imitation fur) toys have left some youngsters feeling as though they are taking their animal friends at CALM home with them. In the collection are cuddly bears, otters, bobcats, Peregrine falcons, mountain lions, kit foxes and kangaroo rats.
"Adults are awed by the absolutely gorgeous line of real leaves dipped in gold or silver by Still Life," said Program Supervisor Lana Fain. "Each one is so unique from the rest. Some are ornaments. Others are decorative candles. They are so beautiful that they can be adored and passed on as heirlooms. They look delicate. Yet they are sturdy. Every leaf is distinct to its origins, including cottonwoods, oak, sugar maple and many more."
The CALM Gift Shop also features Brushkin ornaments — made in the Phillippines out of native palm and resembling friendly animals. Those looking for jewelry can check out the wildlife/nature themes of Wild Bryde and Sue B. Designs. For holiday shoppers, there are necklaces, Santa hats, fiber optic Santas, antlers that light up, snowmen, reindeer, flashlights, stocking stuffers, matching pins and earrings. Wearable souvenirs include wildlife socks, CALM sweatshirts and long-sleeved T-shirts.
The CALM Gift Shop is open Tuesday-Sunday, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and during HolidayLights @ CALM from 5:30-9 p.m., Dec. 3-5, Dec. 8-12, Dec. 15-23 and Dec. 26-30.
