Car lovers of all sorts, shapes and sizes dropped in on the second annual “Fabulous Fifty’s Fun Car Show” on Oct. 9 hosted by Olive Knolls Church of the Nazarene in Bakersfield. The Old Friends of Bakersfield Car Club, which sponsored the show, was happy they did and so was MOVE International, the recipient of the more than $5,700 raised at the charity event.
A $25 or $30 entry fee gave vintage car collectors and weekend restoration mechanics a chance to show off 1950s era vehicles. There were plenty to see — the very popular 1955 Chevy’s, Ford Thunderbirds and even the Hemi engine, Dodge made famous. Attention-grabbing street rods drew big crowds with their raised hoods revealing multi-piped engines of power and speed. Highly polished reverse chrome wheels, candy apple-painted car bodies and trendy, tuck-and-roll upholstery drew long admiring gazes from spectators and car collectors.
Everyone who pre-registered received “goodie bags” and dash plaques. Merchant awards were presented to the best of the show in several car categories. Adding to the fun was an opportunity drawing, silent auction, 1950s outfit contest and a cakewalk.
But the real winners were children and adults with severe disabilities who are taught to sit, stand and walk independently by the non-profit foundation, MOVE (Mobility Opportunities Via Education) International headquartered in Bakersfield. Thanks to the large number of entries, Old Friends of Bakersfield Car Club President Gil Edmondson presented a check, based on the proceeds from the event to representatives from MOVE. Car club Vice President John Pierce talked about the commitment.
“Two years ago, MOVE made a presentation, showing us a video and explaining how the program helps people who can’t help themselves find a way so they could. They really made an impression, and everyone in the club was excited, knowing by sponsoring a car show we could help make a difference. Today, MOVE is our primary fund-raising event.”
MOVE Executive Director David Schreuder sees the donation as more than a kind gesture.
“We are thrilled they want to help us in this way,” said Schreuder. “I mean they donated all the proceeds from this event to us. The Old Friends of Bakersfield Car Club has become so committed to helping that a close relationship has developed between our two organizations. Everybody had fun at the car show, and, more importantly, we all benefited greatly.”
