Special education students provide coffee service
Special education students are helping provide that morning pick-me-up by delivering fresh brewed coffee, cappuccino and cold drinks to those working in the City Centre building. In the process they also gain work experience and customer service skills.
The students are part of the Actis Stars Coffee Company, which has been operating at Actis Junior High for much of the school year. The summer City Centre service is intended to provide additional exposure and client service experience.
Three students working at the City Centre are part of the summer school program. During the regular school year, about 19 students participate.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, through July 15, students prepare and deliver orders directly to the desks of City Centre staffers. Order forms, available in the 4th floor lunch room, must be turned in the day before. And orders are limited to 40 per day.
The students are trained and assisted by special education teachers Diane Chetelat, RaeAnn Boston along with Brittin Weddle a program technician. All work with autistic classes at our program operated at Actis Junior High.
“We felt bringing the Actis coffee program to the City Centre would be a positive training experience for the students and give our employees an opportunity to interact with these special people,” said Pam Sanders, administrator, Division of Special Education Services. “Watching these students work demonstrates that exceptional needs need not be a limiting factor in learning skills that may lead to employment once their education is complete.”
