wesouth042: South is the wild cardBakersfield’s South High School received a “wild card” entry into the California “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” student competition to be held Feb. 4-6 in Sacramento.

The announcement came on Jan. 12 from Roy Erickson, state coordinator of the “We the People...” competition. South High finished second to Centennial High School during the Region Four event held on Dec. 11 in Bakersfield. As one of the top two, highest-scoring, second place finishers in statewide regional competitions, South High earned the right along with Centennial to represent Kern County in Sacramento. The other wild card entry is Bella Vista High School of Sacramento.

“We were nervous, and this is just a huge relief to hear the team is going to Sacramento,” said David Palos, South High’s first year, team coach/teacher. “We had started fund raising in hopes of getting a wild card. Now, the team will continue to practice really hard, and we expect to be very competitive.”

On Dec. 4, South High defeated 11-time champion Arvin High to capture the 20th Congressional District championship, its first in school history. South then placed second to Centennial, the 22nd Congressional District champion, on Dec. 11.

South High team members are: Jacob Champlin, Traleese Coston, Hai Le, Frank Madrid, Sarah Massey, Angelique Ronald, Raheel Chaudhry, Tristan Eckles, Daniel Fuentes, Sonia Ibarra, Arshdeep Kaur, Candice Figures, Osvaldo Gutierrez, Dali Jin, Lisa Longoria, Hermyn Mendez, Alex Crite, Stephanie DelaCruz, Cheylinel Gaston, Whitney Johnson, Michelle Montemayor, Tinesha Garrett, Justin Mattly, Marissa Orozco, Spencer Seward, Nathan Wilkerson, Ashleigh Crist, Flor Del Hoyo, Yuridia Del Villar, Valeria Gone, Marylou Juanatas and Ariana Morales.
