Wasco student leaders of tomorrow

wascotv032: Wasco student leaders of tomorrowWasco Union High School students involved in a program called Tomorrow’s Leaders Today toured the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office (KCSOS) at 1300 17th Street in Bakersfield on October 23. It was part of their training to acquire leadership skills that will help them become active in their community.

The program is sponsored by Wasco Rotary Club, North Kern Vocational Training Center and Wasco Union High and before the school year ends 21 students will have learned about careers in medicine, law enforcement, government, media, agriculture, energy, military, environment and education.

On their tour of KCSOS, students got an overview and learned about a career in law from Schools Legal Service Assistant General Counsel Grant Herndon. At the same time, another group toured the office’s educational TV facilities finding out about opportunities in broadcasting from Production Manager John Lenko. Still others examined the vocational options available in technology with Technology Support Services Administrator Roy Marchetti.

Wasco Rotary Club’s Vard Terry said, “The students were nominated by teachers and administrators. Some are not necessarily leaders now but have leadership potential. Our goal is to bring out the potential in them and have them pass on what they learn to help others become better citizens. One of the reasons for tours such as this is to expose students to a variety of options they might pursue when they leave high school.”

After the tours ended, students had an opportunity to have lunch and discuss educational subjects with Kern County Superintendent of School Larry E. Reider, Assistant Superintendent Christine Frazier and School District Administration Advisory Services Regional Directors Michael Coleman and Armando Vázquez.
