Levels of Classified Employment

Limited Term Employee
An employee who is serving in a position established for a period of six months or less. This employment is similar to a provisional appointment, but may occur in “temporary” employment. Generally used when no “open position” exists, and the program is evaluating the need for additional positions. Ed. Code 45286

Substitute Employee
An employee occupying a position regularly held by a permanent or probationary employee who is absent on either a short-term (day to day) or long-term basis.

Provisional Appointment
The appointment of a qualified person to fill a “position” for which no appropriate employment list exists pending an examination. Provisional appointment should be as short as possible. No appointment shall last longer than 126 working days in any one fiscal year. Ed. Code 45287

The Personnel Commission may extend the assignment for 36 working days if certain criteria are present. Ed. Code 45288

Full Time Students Employed Part Time
Students under “full-time” enrollment in an educational institution Ed. Code 45256.

Part-Time Students Employed Part-Time
Employees who are enrolled in college work-study programs or work experience educational programs conducted by a community college district per Ed. Code 51760 and financed by state or federal funds.

Special Projects
Employment of “professional experts” on a temporary basis for a specific project by the employer and with the approval of the commission.
