SALARY & BENEFITS:
$3,524 - $4,269 per month.  Maximum entry level $3,881 per month.  Holiday, sick leave and vacation benefits.  Prepaid medical, dental, vision, and counseling plans provided for employee and family.  Prepaid life insurance policy provided for the employee.  Employees of this office are not covered by Social Security, but do have mandatory retirement coverage with Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Disseminate program information, process preliminary claims, and claims investigation.  Assist participating employers in the investigation and documentation pertaining to an industrial illness or injury.  Review reports for accuracy and completeness and investigate claims for acceptance and/or denial.  Calculate and pay temporary disability benefits when entitlement is determined and discontinue benefits when an employee is able to return to active service.  Evaluate medical reports to determine permanent and stationary status.  Rate permanent disability.  Calculate benefit rate and pay permanent disability, if applicable.  Assist medical providers regarding billing problems, issues and concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by coursework and training in business office practices, workers’ compensation insurance matters, or closely related fields.  One year of workers’ compensation insurance examiner experience required, preferably in a self-insurance operation.  Knowledge of the legal mandates, policies, and regulations regarding workers’ compensation insurance programs.  Knowledge of workers’ compensation benefit and claims processing procedures.  Typing or keyboard certificate for 40 words per minute.

APPLICATION AND SCREENING PROCEDURES:
All candidates must file an application and valid typing certificate with the Human Resources Department at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office, 1300 17th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301, (661) 636-4391 on or before May 21, 2008 by 5:15 p.m.

Candidates must achieve 70% on the written examination to qualify for an oral interview.  Examinations will be weighted 30% for written and 70% for oral.  Candidates must obtain a composite score of 70% or better to qualify for the eligibility list.

Policy requires that the necessary typing or keyboard certificate be obtained within the past two years from an acceptable testing source.  Certificates must be submitted with application.

Written examination:  May 28, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.  Candidates unless otherwise notified should report to the Human Resources Department and provide photo identification for entrance to the written examination.  Oral examination: June 5, 2008 by individual appointment only.  Late entrance to the exam or interview will not be allowed.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Some positions may require proof of privately owned automobile insurance and the possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license.  Fingerprint clearance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met.  This position has a probationary period of six months or 130 days in paid service, whichever is longer.
