SALARY:
$14.54 - $17.56 per hour for up to 40 hours per week. Maximum entry level is $16.00 per hour. The Cambria campus operates from September – June. Time worked is as assigned and varies according to student participation schedule. Holiday, sick leave and vacation benefits are accrued based on work schedule. Medical cost reimbursement plan will be provided based on work schedule. Employees of this office are not covered by Social Security, but do have mandatory retirement coverage with Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Positions are located in the Central Coast of California in Cambria.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop, teach and coordinate with other naturalists a trail program, conduct trail walks for groups of students, develop, and operate non-trail activities.
• Help develop resource material in subject areas related to overall program goals.
• Develop a variety of instructional materials and learning aids, including displays and exhibits.
• Develop appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement strategies and techniques.
• Sing, tell stories and strive to make possible a positive memorable lifetime experience for all participants.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and secure facility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• B.A. or B.S. degree from an accredited college or university preferred or the completion of a B.A. or B.S. within one year of hire.
• One-year experience with children and/or environmental education preferred.
• Background in environmental education, strong in thematic/concept/activity based programs.
• Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics.
• Lift 50 pounds, move heavy materials, and carry a 25-pound backpack.
• Possess and maintain a good physical and mental health and fitness.
• Ability to walk/hike ten miles per day up and down narrow trails in hilly terrain.
• Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, including adults in small as well as large group activities.

All candidates must file an application, supplemental application, resume, and proof of formal education with the Human Resources Department at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office, 1300 17th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301, (661) 636-4391 on or before May 2, 2008, by 5:15 p.m.
Each candidate’s application papers will be thoroughly evaluated and ranked by a screening committee appointed by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. Candidates achieving a rating of 70% or better will qualify to continue in the eligibility screening process. For entry-level positions, veterans shall be allowed an additional credit of five points to their composite score. A copy of your DD-214 must be submitted at the time of application to receive veteran’s credit.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Some positions may require proof of privately owned automobile insurance and the possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license.
Possess or secure within one month of employment, a certificate for first aide and CPR issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
Obtain a clear certificate of Tuberculosis.
Fingerprint clearance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met.
A pre-placement medical assessment is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met. This position is required to lift 50 pounds.
This position has a probationary period of six months or 130 days in paid service, whichever is longer.
