SALARY:
$11.49 - $13.83 per hour. Maximum entry level is $12.62 per hour. Work schedule is 5-6 hours per day depending on assignment, for approximately ten months per year. Holiday, sick leave, and vacation benefits are provided on a prorated basis. Prepaid medical, dental, vision, and counseling plans provided for employee and family. Prepaid life insurance policy provided for the employee. Employees working less than full-time are required to pay a portion of their insurance premiums if they elect coverage. Employees of this office are not covered by Social Security, but do have mandatory retirement coverage with Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials.
• Tutor individual and small groups of students with special learning needs.
• Prepare instructional materials and learning aides for students.
• Assist children with feeding, toileting, and personal hygiene.
• Perform routine clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
• Must submit proof of passage of the Basic Proficiency Test if high school graduation is prior to 1981 or if high school diploma is from outside of California.
• One year of paid or volunteer experience working with children of various age levels requiring a specialized learning environment.
• Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to pupils with special learning needs.
• Knowledge of behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils experiencing atypical control problems.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds, stoop, bend, crawl, and reach overhead.

All candidates must file an application and proof of education with the Human Resources Department of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, 1300 17th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301, (661) 636-4391 on or before May 28, 2008, by 5:15 p.m.
Candidates must achieve 70% on the written examination to qualify for an oral interview. Examinations will be weighted 30% for written and 70% for oral. Candidates must obtain a composite score of 70% or better to qualify for the eligibility list. For entry-level positions, veterans shall be allowed an additional credit of five points to their composite score. A copy of your DD-214 must be submitted at the time of application for veteran’s credit.
Policy requires that a copy of high school proficiency test certificate or a copy of California high school diploma, if graduated from twelfth grade after 1981, be filed with application.
Written examination: June 5, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. Candidates, unless otherwise notified, should report to the Human Resources Department and provide photo identification for entrance to the written examination. Oral examination: June 12-13, 2008, by individual appointment only. Late entrance to the exam or interview will not be allowed.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Some positions may require proof of privately owned automobile insurance and the possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license.
Fingerprint clearance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met.
A preplacement medical assessment is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met. This position is required to lift 50 pounds.
Possess or secure within six months of employment, a certificate for first aide and CPR issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
This position has a probationary period of six months or 130 days in paid service, whichever is longer.
