EVACUATION PROCEDURES

The Teacher must:

1. Lead the students to the door. If you do not have students,

Report to the secretary at the parent pick-up center.

2. Take out your class list, comfort packs and emergency materials.

* Tape the red card on door if someone had to remain in the room.

* Tape the green card on door if the room is clear, and lock the door as you leave.

* Evacuation routes are posted at all room exits.

3. Proceed with evacuation and first aid:  Do not move anyone who is seriously injured unless it is absolutely necessary

* Students with major injuries are to remain in the classroom supervised by any adult present, children with minor injuries are to be cared for after evacuation.

* Assign one teacher or Instructional Aide to remain with the student. If you stay with a student, use your Aide to evacuate the class.

* Teachers are in charge of all first aid for the students in their class group until Emergency Response arrives (Fire Department).

* RECORD any first aid given to a child or adult regardless of how minor the injury.

4. Take roll.

* Notify the secretary immediately of any student who is not with the class group, noting possible whereabouts (i.e., library, bathroom, absent from school, etc).

* If all your students are accounted for, hold up green card in view of the Secretary.

* If a student is missing, hold up the red card.

5. Note on your class roster the name, time and destination of anyone, who for any reason leaves the class group to go to Parent Pick-Up or to the Secretary.

6. Provide calm leadership.

* Encourage the students to talk about their experience and feelings. Talking is the best way for a fearful child to give expression to his/her concerns. Talking with students will provide them reassurance, and allow the anxious child the means to vent his/her fears.

FIRE DRILL PROCEDURES

Teacher's Duties

1. Close all doors and windows.

2. Lead your students to their designated area in the safety zone.

3. Keep students in a straight line and focused on following your directions.

4. Take roll and make sure all the class members are accounted for.

5. Instruct students in areas other than their classroom at the time of a drill or emergency (i.e., restroom, playground, library) to report immediately to their classes' designated safety zone.

6. Prevent students from re-entering the building during the emergency or drill.

7. Remain with your students until the "all clear" is given.

8. Become familiar with the location and the use of fire extinguishers and alarm boxes in your building.

LOCK-DOWN/SHELTER IN PLACE PROCEDURE

Safety and Security Procedures:

When the announcement is made for "lock-down", initiate the following procedures:

1. Lock doors as a method of controlling movement around the campus.

2. Close and lock windows, close shades (if possible) and turn off lights.

3. Instruct students and staff to "duck and cover" away from the view of anyone outside the room.

* Remain calm and still

* In the event of a shooting or explosion, remain in the classroom until instructed by and administrator or emergency law enforcement personnel.

4. Retain students until an administrator or law enforcement give an "all clear."
