Disputes, Disagreements and Decisions

The special education process can frequently result in differences of opinion. The ability to resolve the disagreement is key to reducing the expense and stress of due process procedures. One of the focus areas for the SELPA this year is increasing the skills we all have and need in solving disagreements and disputes that are part of doing the business of Special Education. The SELPA this year will again sponsor several trainings, with supported costs for Consortium district participants.

Conflicts are opportunities for change - This is a basic conflict resolution training that will address conflict management, communication, understanding basic issues/interests/needs, and mediation skills.

arrow: Basic Training - there will be two sessions (three days each session) October 19, 20, 21
arrow: Advanced Training - available only to those who took basic training this year or in the past

Facilitated IEP Training - Initial Training (Limited to 25 participants)
Advanced training in techniques for the most difficult IEP meetings and reaching consensus among the participants. This is a three day intensive session that involves lecture, practice, and interactive learning to increase competence in dealing with the IEP issues, defusing anger and maintaining focus on the student and his or her outcomes.

Facilitated IEP Training - Follow-up Sessions
Designed to increase skills that were learned, network with other trained Facilitators, and share what has worked well in difficult meetings. There will be five sessions scheduled throughout the year and only those who have completed the training may participate. A flyer will be sent to those who attended the previous trainings.

Individual flyers will be sent as the trainings are scheduled. If you have questions or need more information, please call Darleen Jehnsen, SELPA Director, at 661.636.4801
