FCMAT broadcast addresses legislation

Education legislation was the topic as the Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) broadcast a live panel teleconference for the fourth year from the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office in Bakersfield on October 26.

Some of the state’s top academic experts spent 90 minutes discussing the “Top 10 Education Bills for 2001.” Bills discussed were Senate Bill (SB) 6 “Reduction in PERS ‘Tax’ to School Districts,” SB 19 “Child Nutrition Reform/Controls,” SB 233 “STAR Test Extension and Revision,” SB 735 “Desegregation Funding,” SB 1129 “School Facility Improvement Bond Vote Threshold,” Assembly Bill (AB) 75 “Principal Training Program,” AB 466 “Reading and Math Professional Development,” AB 961 “Low-Performing Schools: High-Priority Schools Grant Program” and AB 1609 “High School Exit Exams.”

Moderator for the discussion was Ken Hall of School Services of California. Panelists were John Mockler, executive director of the State Board of Education; Scott Plotkin, executive director of the California School Boards Association; Bill Chavez, president of Strategic Education Services and Rick Simpson, policy director Office of Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg.

The teleconference was beamed to an estimated 150 sites statewide, including the 58 county offices of education. Viewer questions were received via email and fax and were answered live during the broadcast. Additional viewers watched streaming video of the teleconference through the FCMAT website.
