Students show job skills at Olympic event

The competition, held on April 6 at the Kern High School District ROP (Regional Occupation Program) facilities on South Mt. Vernon Avenue, attracted about 380 entrants from four programs: Kern County ROP (KCROP), North Kern Vocational Training Center, Kern High School District ROP and West Side ROP.
This year a large contingent of students from KCROP, operated by the county office, signed up for the competition in 18 vocational fields ranging from Computer Repair to Law Enforcement and Health Careers (law enforcement was a new category this year). Their efforts resulted in four 1st place awards, six 2nd place awards and four 3rd place awards.
“It’s a healthy, friendly competition,” said Dan McQuillen, KCROP director and president of the Golden Empire Chapter of the California Association of Regional Occupational Centers and Programs.
“And it’s a great opportunity for students to compare their skills,” added Frank Johnson, dean of students of Kern High School District and coordinator of this year’s event.
