Standards and Framework
Foreign Language Challenge Standards
The California State
Board of Education has not adopted content standards in the subject of
Foreign Language. Foreign Language Challenge Standards are provided as
a resource to help school districts establish standards for the content
area.
Foreign Language Framework
The ability to communicate in a language other than one’s own enables
students to grow academically and personally. The Foreign Language
Framework focuses on developing the highest levels of foreign language
proficiency in California students and outlines the content of the
foreign language curriculum. This new 2003 edition is anchored in the
Language Learning Continuum, published by the College Entrance
Examination Board. The continuum provides clear benchmarks for
measuring students’ ability to perform in the target language in
culturally appropriate ways.
To order a printed version of the framework, contact the CDE press at 800-995-4099.
