Teen Births
![]()
"The decline in teen birth rates has had a major impact on the number of babies born to teenage mothers. If the teen birth rate had remained at 1991 levels throughout the 1990s and with the rising number of teenagers in the United States, there would have been about 550,000 additional births to teenagers over the decade." - National Center for Health Statistics"Data show that teen birth rates in the San Joaquin Valley have been decreasing over the last decade. Nevertheless, Valley rates exceed those of the state and nation. In 2002, the Valley teen birth rate was almost 50% higher than that of the U.S. rate and over 50% higher than the rate for California. The direct economic costs of teen births in the Valley are profound and are estimated at $256,000,000 annually. The social consequences are also far reaching and have implications for the immediate needs of teens who give birth and for the future needs of their children" - Adolescence Interrupted, CSU Fresno
