Standardized Test Scores

Each year public schools conduct a standardized test of all school children from 2nd through 11th grade. This test, called the Stanford 9, allows parents, teachers, administrators, and policy makers to compare groups of students on their knowledge of basic subjects.
The 50th percentile score for all US children is the guideline for comparison. It is believed that by scoring at or above the national 50th percentile score, children demonstrate adequate basic education skills.
The California Department of Education's DataQuest website houses the state's education data. With some information dating back to the early 1990s, local researchers can easily compare trends over time for students.
The following links are a small portion of the data available at this website. DataQuest is very user friendly and for those regularly using education data, we recommend becoming well acquainted with it.
