Graduation and College Preparation
Each year the California Department of Education tallies the number of graduates leaving the public school system. They also record the number of graduates that have successfully completed all of the required courses for easy entry into the University of California or California State University system. These courses are commonly referred to as the "A-G" requirements.A "college preparation rate" can be derived by dividing the number of high school graduates by the number completing these UC/CSU preparatory classes. For instance, the county-wide graduating class of 1999 had a college preparation rate of 19.4% (1,508 UC/CSU prepared students divided by 7,772 total graduates).
The California Department of Education's DataQuest website houses the state's education data. With some information dating back to the early 1990s, local researchers can easily compare trends over time for students. This site offers dropout data for individual schools and districts, as well as, county and state information.
The following links are a small portion of the data available at this website. DataQuest is very user friendly and for those regularly using education data, we recommend becoming well acquainted with it.
